Kuumba, one of Kwanzaa's principles, advocates creativity. We would like to stimulate your Kuumba by pointing towards information about education, grants, scholarship, books, reviews, and Black History......we hope to heighten your awareness of and desire for knowledge and specifically culturally knowledge. We cannot depend on others to teach us our own history....we can learn for ourselves! Take a look at our Kuumba Directory for organizations in your area dedicated to enhancing the quality of education. We even have links for Teacher Resources and Lesson Plans
There are four rungs on
the ladder of success:
Plan Purposefully, Prepare
Prayerfully, Proceed Positively, and Pursue Persistently
Please
pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews, friends with
children.. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are
a college student or getting ready to become one, you probably already
know how useful additional money can be. Our youth really could use these
scholarships.

TIMELESS REMINDER - "WE

Letter from a Teacher

PARENTS - Subj: Re: [BlackAndProud] Getting kids
school-ready

As a middle school teacher I
can't begin to tell you the frustrations dealing with children who can't
read and write coherently. I'm also concerned about the lack of awareness
on the children's part, especially with the world around them. For
youngsters who have nearly everything handed to them, with all the information
technology at their fingertips, there are those who haven't a clue what
is around them. I always stress to parents to read to their young children.
Also, there are so many things to do around town that are free or low cost.
Many museums, zoos, parks, historic places, nature preserves offer family
memberships; some places that charge admission have free days. Our zoo
offers reduced price admission on certain days of the month. Then there
are the various book sales. Our public library holds book sales every other
month. Hardbacks are $2; paperbound $1. Maps and magazines range from .10
to .50 One does not have to spend a fortune giving their child a boost
in learning.
I commend those parents who are
working with their children -- Such diligence pays off in the end.
I only wish so many other parents would take the time and effort to do
the same. Then our (educators') job
wouldn't be so frustrating, and
we wouldn't lose so many of the best and brightest to other professions
-- Which has happened this year, and I may go the same route after this
school year.
If people truly cared about public
schools, then they should get in the faces of every school board, state
legislator, and education advocate. They shoudl DEMAND fair and equitable
spending, real accountability,
and stop throwing money away on Band-Aid programs. My say, Pam
