The World's Largest Celebration of Culture
and Cooperative Economics

HISTORY

Kwanzaa Fest, formerly The Kwanzaa Holiday Expo, was first held in 1981. In the beginning, there were a lot of questions surrounding the celebration called Kwanzaa. Now, most of these questions have been answered. More than 500,000 consumers have made Kwanzaa Fest a "must-attend" event for the whole family because it reaffirms their sense of ethnic pride, celebrates traditional values and captures their hearts as well as their minds. Kwanzaa Fest's economic impact is unmistakable and multi-faceted. For example, it is conservatively estimated that collectively vendors at each Expo will gross over $1.5 million in sales in just three to four days.

Kwanzaa Fest has enjoyed uninterrupted growth for 17 years and is the oldest African-American cultural expo in the nation. However, unlike similar shows (many of which have adopted our format), Kwanzaa Fest has the distinct advantage of being the only one whose appeal is tied to a specific event - the cultural phenomenon of Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa Fest began as a one-day, community-based event sponsored by the New York Urban Coalition. It was held in a public school gymnasium in Harlem and lasted just a few hours.  Kwanzaa Fest has become the largest Kwanzaa celebration transforming Jacob K. Javits Convention Center into a vibrant cultural "edutainment" center and bustling Afrocentric mall. Thousands of consumers are drawn to Kwanzaa Fest over and over again. They not only come to purchase holiday gifts but to enjoy cultural activities, live concerts, fashion shows, food, children's activities, and educational forums.

The Celebration is an annual event produced in an effort to maintain the principles of Kwanzaa by providing a central location where people of color and other ethnic groups can learn about, practice, and benefit from the principles of Kwanzaa.  The Centerpiece of this Celebrationis Kwanzaa Fest. The reason for the success is that it capitalizes on an explosive trend toward cultural awareness and ethnic pride in the black community.
